We spend much of our lives on our mattresses because we spend so much time in bed. As a result, it quickly becomes dirty, smelly and unhealthy. It is recommended to have your mattress professionally cleaned about every three to five years. However, it is up to the owner to do basic maintenance mattress cleanings about every six months. This will ensure your mattress is clean and free of pests and bacteria. Go Green Carpet Cleaning & Restoration will walk you through the steps for a basic, yet proper maintenance mattress cleaning.

How to Deep Clean a Mattress & Remove Stains

Step 1. Remove all of the bedding and mattress covers if used and have them washed with hot water and dried on high heat. This will kill any possible pests such as beg bugs and dust mites along with any bacteria.
Step 2. With the mattress exposed, vacuum the mattress thoroughly on all sides. This includes the top and bottom and the four side of the mattress. This will help extract dirt, dust mites and other debris found in your mattress.
Step 3. With the mattress vacuumed, first clean any stains on the mattress from spills, urine, blood, or any other common stains found on mattresses. For most stains you can use a stain remover or just regular water combined with liquid dish soap. Use a sponge to clean the stains. Note you will do the same thing on the other side.
Step 4. Next you will want to kill any bacteria, fungus and germs inside the mattress. You can use a combination of vinegar and water about a one to one ratio in a spray bottle and cover the entire mattress and sides. Make sure the surface gets a little damp. You can also use commercial cleaners or even bleach mixed with water will do the trick. However bleach will discolor the mattress.
Step 6. Allow the vinegar, bleach or germ killing treatment to dry. Once it is fully dry, sprinkle baking soda and let the baking soda set on the mattress for 30 minutes to soak up any odors in the mattress. After the baking soda has had time to soak up the odors, use your vacuum cleaner to suck up all of the baking soda.
Step 7. Flip the mattress to the other side. You will then repeat all of the previous steps form vacuuming, stain removal, disinfecting to deodorizing the mattress.
Step 8. Now that your mattress has been cleaned, put your freshly cleaned bedding back on your bed and enjoy a clean healthy night’s sleep.
It is recommended to flip and rotate mattresses each time you clean your mattress, which should be every six months. This will help spread out the constant wear on the mattress, especially spring mattresses. Dirty mattresses can invite dust mites and bed bugs, along with germs and bacteria that can cause allergies and skin irritations. You can also use carpet cleaning machines with an upholstery attachment to clean mattresses which can help give a slightly deeper clean.
